ILCA Oceania has opened applications for the 5th Youth Solidarity Program aimed at female sailors in the ILCA 4 class. The 2027 host championship is the Oceania and Australian Open and Youth ILCA Championships at Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne from 1 January to 8 January 2027. One successful applicant will be chosen by the ILCA District in the home country of the sailor, or in the home state or territory for Australian sailors. The Oceania Sailing Federation relays the invitation. Member federations and clubs can put eligible girls forward in good time for district review.

Built to raise female participation in ILCA 4 rather than to chase individual podiums, the programme treats the class as the natural step up from junior fleets. ILCA Oceania wants more ILCA 4 boats at the Oceania and Australian Open and Youth Championships and at ILCA sponsored youth regattas. Squad coaching during the event pairs with Youth Solidarity merchandise in the support package. Event entry is supplied free of charge to the sailor selected through the district process. An ILCA 4 charter boat in race condition is also supplied free of charge.

Successful applicants must arrange their own passage to Melbourne and their own accommodation near Sandringham Yacht Club. Parental or guardian consent applies for sailors under eighteen. A responsible adult named on the consent form must supervise the sailor at the venue. Program access and boat access begin at 0930 hrs on 1 January 2027 at Sandringham Yacht Club. Performance Sailcraft ILCA craft are supplied fully rigged with sails. Selected sailors must use the equipment provided for the championship week. Injury or illness limiting performance must be reported to the district ahead of and after selection.

To apply, sailors complete the official online application form by 1 August 2026. Late applications cannot be accepted under the published closing rule. The form collects personal contact details and club and district identity. Applicants also state the year sailing began and give a short account of sailing experience with classes already sailed. District selectors then assess applications under the ILCA Oceania selection policy for the Solidarity places. See online application webpage.

Eligibility centres on citizenship of an Oceania country and membership of an ILCA District. The target group is female sailors aged 13 to 16 who sail ILCA 4. They should enjoy time on the water and want a first or early taste of a large multi-district championship. A minimum body weight of 50kg is listed in the programme information document. Regatta experience at least at state level in 2 regattas over the past 12 months is recommended. Sailors who lack such history may still apply if they explain the gap in their form answers.

When districts weigh candidates, race results are not the main test. Selectors look for effort and attitude. They also weigh willingness to give the week a genuine try and how far the sailor is likely to benefit from the experience. Potential to help grow a club ILCA 4 fleet matters. Stage of development and intent to keep sailing ILCA 4 also matter. Whether the sailor could not otherwise attend the Melbourne championship without Solidarity support is another recommended factor in the information document.

Because many girls are told to wait until they feel ready, the program is aimed at sailors who are still developing and new to bigger fleets. Large championships can feel heavy with measurement tasks and experienced competitors. Solidarity sailors arrive into a small shared team with a coach on shore and on the water. A welcome ceremony pairs with a welcome pack to ease the first days. Learning and honest effort rank ahead of perfection for the championship week. Although the Melbourne event falls months after mid 2026, clubs can already pair the Solidarity calendar with domestic ILCA 4 racing. Fiji Yachting Association has listed ILCA 4 among the fleets at the 2026 Fiji Sailing National Championships in Suva on 23 and 24 August 2026. Girls who contest ILCA 4 in Suva or other regional regattas can use those starts as proof of effort when districts review Solidarity files.

Held at the National Sailing Centre on Laucala Bay with Royal Suva Yacht Club as host, the Fiji nationals also feed wider ILCA pathways toward senior fleets. For older ILCA classes, Pacific Games selection talk already surrounds the Suva program. ILCA 4 remains a youth development class, yet time in the youth boat at a national championship still strengthens confidence for a January championship abroad. Clubs in Fiji and across Oceania may therefore treat the Suva notice and the Solidarity form as linked steps on one junior pathway rather than as isolated circulars.

There is a short application window left until 1 August 2026. Districts delaying circulation risk missing sailors who would gain most from the week. Coaches and club officers should share the form with ILCA 4 girls and with parents who support youth fleets.

After a district names its sailor, the sailor still plans transport and lodging. The sailor must also keep the district informed of any performance-limiting injury or illness. Informed reporting protects the sailor and the charter boat allocation. The program and boat access start on the morning of 1 January 2027. Arriving ready for measurement and first coaching sessions keeps the Solidarity team on schedule with the wider championship fleet at Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne.

In the Oceania Sailing Federation view, solidarity places of this kind widen access to continental youth championships without forcing families to fund entry and charter alone. ILCA Oceania, the regional ILCA structure for Australian and Aoteraoa districts with Pacific partners, has staged this Youth Solidarity cycle five times. Relaying the 2027 round supports OSAF aims to encourage fair opportunity and youth development among member nations. The federation does not select the sailors. District processes retain the selection role under ILCA policy.

Completing a domestic national in a youth class and then contesting a multi-nation ILCA championship builds a fuller season for a teenage sailor. Share the 2026 Fiji Sailing National Championships, place the Solidarity form in the hands of eligible girls well before 1 August 2026. District officers should confirm membership status prior to nomination.
