ILCA Oceania Solidarity Programme Continues to Champion Young Female Sailors

Published Fri 23 May 2025

The International Laser Class Association Oceania is once again offering young female sailors an exceptional opportunity to advance their sailing careers through the 2026 Solidarity Programme.

Taking place during the Oceania & Australian ILCA Open & Youth Championships at the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania from 1-8 January 2026, the programme will select seven promising sailors aged 13-16 from across the region—one from each Australian state and one from New Zealand.

The initiative specifically targets newcomers to the ILCA 4 class, providing them with comprehensive support including a new boat for the championships, professional coaching, entry fees coverage, and sailing equipment. Participants are responsible only for their travel, accommodation, and meals, whilst parents are welcome to attend this milestone experience.

Previous participants have consistently reported significant growth in both sailing ability and confidence. The 2025 programme saw sailors including Lucy Luxford from New Zealand's Charteris Bay Yacht Club, Queensland's Evie McGuire, and Victoria's Alexandria Ewart form lasting bonds whilst making substantial progress in their sailing development.

This programme has consistently demonstrated its value in developing young talent across our region in creating pathways for female sailors to advance in competitive sailing.

The Oceania Sailing Federation strongly supports initiatives that promote sailing development across the Pacific region, particularly those focused on encouraging female participation at the youth level. Clubs with suitable candidates are encouraged to contact their local ILCA District representatives regarding nomination procedures.

Selection is conducted through ILCA District associations, with final approval by ILCA Oceania. The programme represents a significant investment in the future of female sailing in our region and continues to produce promising results year after year.
